EUL at the World Mining Congress 2026 in Lima, Peru
EUL was represented by its Vice-Chair, Dr Krzysztof Fuławka, who presented work carried out within the PERSEPHONE project. His presentation, entitled “Integrating 3D Numerical Simulations into Mine Design: Insights from the PERSEPHONE Project,” focused on the use of large-scale three-dimensional numerical models to support underground mine design and geomechanical assessment.
The presented approach combines numerical modelling with field observations and monitoring data in order to better reproduce actual rock-mass behaviour and assess the response of underground excavations under different operational scenarios. Such models can support decisions related to excavation geometry, stability, mining sequence and risk reduction.

“Large-scale numerical modelling is becoming much more than a design tool. When combined with monitoring data and autonomous inspection, it can help us assess underground workings more safely and support decisions on their future reuse,” said Krzysztof. “This is particularly important for EUL, because many underground facilities can potentially gain a second life as research, testing or industrial infrastructure.”
EUL’s participation in WMC 2026 highlighted the growing connection between mining engineering, digital technologies and the future reuse of underground space.
