Information

Global network of underground research

Underground laboratories can be found on almost every continent. The underground laboratories can purposely build or use existing underground infrastructures (civil engineering) or mines for research purposes. The user networks are also global.

This interactive map shows the online discovered underground laboratories, their research categories (Web of Science, WoS), and user network based on WoS literature search. The temporal evolution of underground laboratories and research can also be observed.

The literature metadata was collected from WoS, and the authors geocoded the corresponding publications to specific underground laboratories and first author institutions.

The chosen symbols, colours, and sizes indicated the activity and level of collaborations based on the number of linked publications.
